"The society was founded [in 1989] by the Belarusian Writers' Union, the Ministries of Education and of Culture, the Institutes of Linguistics and of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences, the Belarusian Cultural Fund, the State Committee on the Press, the Belarusian Society of Friendship and Cultural Links with Foreign Countries, and the National State Television and Radio Company."

Notes

• Evicted from their premises in Mensk by a court decision for non-payment of rent, May, 1998. Many view this action as part of the pro-Russian, pro-Soviet nature of the current regime ruling Belarus and its concomitant anti-Belarusian language, culture, and nationalism actions.

• Also referred to as The Belarusian Language Association (BLA).

• On the 10th Anniversary of the Belarusian Language Society, on June 27, 1999, a special prayer for the Belarusian language was read in all of the major houses of worship in Belarus.
