• Late February, 1997 -- An International Conference on "Civic Ideals in the Post-Communist Countries".

  The conference will be preceded by a round table discussion: "Belarus -- The View from Russia; Russia -- The View from Belarus". • July 26-27, 1997 --   The Second World Convention of Belarusians   Mensk, Belarus. Sponsored by the World Alliance of Belarusians.
  • Given the political climate within Belarus (that is, the politicizing of almost everything by the current regime), it is a wonder that this conference was even held. For example, the administration withheld permission for a venue until the last minute, as well as made it confusing where the convention would talke place. It was finally held in the Musical Comedy Theater in Mensk (was that a comment by the regime?).

  • Attendance was lower than the first World Convention since the current Belarusian government restricted the agenda. As a result, members of the Belarusian diaspora from some countries, including the United States, boycotted the conference.

• September 3th through 5th, 1997 --   "The Role of Scientific Funds in Supporting World Science," Belarusian National Academy of Sciences, Mensk, Belarus.

  "The seminar was organised by the Belarusian National Fundamental Research Foundation in accordance with a decision by the 28th session of the UNESCO general conference.

  The seminar's organising committee, which is led by Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Zametalin, includes Aleksandr Voitovich, president of the National Academy of Sciences; Viktor Gaisenok, chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technologies; Anatoly Dostanko, chairman of the Belarusian Supreme Attestation Committee; Aleksandr Rubanov, president of the National Fundamental Research Foundation; and Vasily Strazhev, minister of education. Applications for participation have already been received from prominent scientists in Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Ukraine. On the proposal of the UNESCO director general, the seminar participants will issue an appeal to the World Scientific Conference which is to be held in 1999. • September 20 and 21, 1997 --   Conservative Policy in Belarus: Ideology and Practices, Viciebsk, Belarus.
  To be organized by the United Civic Party (UCP), one of the most influential Belarusian parties opposing President Lukashenko's policies, and the British Conservative Party. Taking part in the seminar will be the UCP officials Aleksandr Dobrovolsky and Mikhail Plisko, representatives of the UCP youth organisation "Grazhdansky Forum," and the Viciebsk organisation of the Christian Democratic Party. Reports will be made by two members of the British Conservative Party, one of whom is an MP. • October 30th and 31st, 1997 --   The 480th anniversary of the printing the Bible by Francisak Skaryna, Prague, Czech Republic.
  Although the festivities are to take place in Prague on October 30 and 31, the celebration itself started there as far back as September 5. Participating in the festivities will be delegations from Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia. Among the organizers are the Prague Mayor's Office, the Francisak Skaryna Foundation, the Directorate of the Prague Eparchial Department, the Czech National Academy, and the Prague University. The Belarusian organizing committee for the festivities and a delegation to the Czech Republic were formed under the patronage of the Belarusian State Committee on the Press.
