The 6th US Ambassador to Belarus was nominated on July 21, 2006, confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 4, 2006, and was sworn in by the U.S. Secretary of State on September 8, 2006. She arrived in Minsk September 18, 2006. (Previous ambassadors: (5) George A. Krol (from September 4, 2003 -- 2006), (4) Michael Kozak [October 2000 -- August 2003], (3) Daniel V. Speckhard [from August, 1997; was recalled in June, 1998; returned to Belarus & resumed duties on Sept. 16, 1999; completed his term, July, 2000]. Previous ambassadors were (2) Kenneth S. Yalowitz [Nov. 7, 1994 -- August, 1997], and (1) David H. Swartz [Aug., 15, 1992 -- January, 1994].)
The United States recognized Belarusian independence on December 25, 1991.
