Excerpts from the US BISNIS Web page (July, 1997; Belarus info no longer available on Web, April, 1999; many of the remaining ABC sites will close in April, 1999.):
"The investment climate in Belarus is poor, due to a lack of checks and balances in the flawed governmental structure and the government of Belarus's failure to adopt economic reforms. As a result, the United States recommends that potential investors make cold, hard comparisons between Belarus and other countries, and familiarize themselves fully with the potential risk, before deciding where to pursue business opportunities."
"The government of Belarus officially welcomes foreign investment, which is seen as a source of much-needed hard currency. The government of Belarus policies, however, often seem to reflect a distrust of private enterprise and profit and are therefore not conducive to a favorable investment climate."
The following contact information is probably not accurate (since the ABC does not currently exist within Belarus--July, 1997).
Pending its formal opening this Fall (1995), the ABC can be reached in Belarus at:

Although they produce only small print runs and a limited selection of books, Technalohija is one of the best sources for books in English about Belarus. In addition to the following list of books that are at least in part in English, they also publish even more titles in Russian and Belarusian.
Click on the following book titles for more information about each book. (Go to the newer Web site listed above for information about additional book titles.)
As far as I know, these books are only available directly from Technalohija or possibly from used book dealers, or from some Belarusian fraternal organizations. Rumor has it that Technalohija will no longer publish books, so get them while you can. All of the books listed are very reasonably priced. Worth the price of a taxi to seek out these books (though I recommend telephoning them first).

"Early in 1989, when the private sector was just emerging in the Soviet Union, a few private individuals--all native Belarusians--started a cooperative, intially involved in the marketing of personal computers. Later in 1991, the team reorganized into a new entity called Dainova, a completely private business with no foreign capital, and continued to further expand operations towards various emerging fields."
"Enjoying almost 60% per annum growth, Dainova has evolved from a small business run by a few people into a corporation with 200-plus, full-time employees. The firm includes personal computer manufacturing, high quality consumer electronics marketing, a printing house, low-waste technology metal processing machinery, metal volume sales, and investments subsidiaries. Combined, these operations yield revenue in excess of USD 32 million (1994)."
"Among expansion into rapidly expanding fields is a retail chain across the country. Two company-owned stores, in Brest and Hrodna, are already up and running. The main office with showroom and warehouse is conveniently located in Mensk, in a 2000 square-meter rented space."
