• Educational Information Centers (EIC) in the NIS
  NIS students who wish to study in the U.S. will want to know about the Educational Information Centers operated throughout the NIS by IREX (International Research and Exchanges Board) and ACTR/ACCELS (American Council of Teachers of Russian).

  The process of getting accepted to a U.S. university and receiving financial aid is complex and can take up to fifteen months. More than forty advising centers have been established in the NIS to provide a number of functions, including: advising NIS students about study and research opportunities in the U.S.; providing information on financial aid; administering GRE, GMAT, TOEFL and other tests often necessary for admittance; and helping to recruit and select students for U.S.-based programs.

  There are six EIC's with Belarus--one in Mensk and one in each of the regional capitals.

• International House
  "International House is a worldwide network of language schools sharing a common commitment to the highest standards of teaching and training. Founded by John Haycraft, CBE, and his wife Brita in 1953, the IH family today has over 100 affiliated member schools and centres in 28 countries all over the world, from Finland to Argentina, and from Singapore to the USA."

  "The central body of the IH world organisation is a British non-profit Educational Charity Trust, based at International House London. The affiliated member organisations throughout the world subscribe to the educational ideals of the Trust and support its activities through annual affiliation fees, but are otherwise commercially independent."

  "The IH Central Department co-ordinates common activities such as educational and training conferences, the provision of recruitment and other services to the affiliated members, and the monitoring of educational standards. To ensure that high standards are fostered and maintained throughout the world organisation, every IH school has a comprehensive educational inspection visit every year."

• USIA programs for the NIS
  "USIA programs for the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union focus on academic, cultural and information exchanges that encourage the development of democracy and free market economies. Examples include:
  • The Edmund Muskie Fellowship program, and the Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program, which brings qualified NIS college graduates to the U.S. for graduate study programs in law, business, economics, and public administration;
    
  • For post-doctoral scholars and provides research fellowships in the social sciences and humanities at U.S. institutions and
  • Under the Freedom Support Act Undergraduate Program, USIA enables undergraduates to study at U.S. universities for one year."
