1996 Olympics Results July & August, 1996; Atlanta, Georgia, USA
The Soviet-style flag, rather than the white-red-white traditional flag was the most obvious symbol of this controversy. Some of the uniforms were based on the white-red-white traditional colors (I'm told, because of not being able to afford new ones), while others were based on the Soviet-style flag and colors. Since viewers in the US only got to hear the US anthem played, no one can tell me which Belarusian anthem was played (at the Women's Single Rowing gold medal ceremony). Not surprisingly, Belarusian athletes were heard speaking Russian rather than Belarusian.
Sad to say, the US television network, NBC, appears to be ignorant of what the Olympics are all about, and rarely showed much of the athletic competition; and when doing so, almost exclusively showed the US participants. (Japan, for example, had as many as three channels simultaneously showing athletic competition. European coverage also was much, much better than US coverage.) If you want to view Olympic competition, don't try to do it from the US.
That all said, the Belarusian team deserves our hearty congratulations and support! Congratulations on your hard work, participation, and successes! Best wishes for other international competition, the winter Olympics, and for the next Summer Olympics!
