Paralympics (Special Olympics)
The 26 Belarusian athletes won a total of 23 medals at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney (which ended on Oct. 29th). Four years ago the Belarusians captured 13 medals in Atlanta. The Belarusian team won five gold, eight silver, and 10 bronze medals compared with three gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals in Atlanta. The Sydney Paralympics gathered about 4,000 athletes from 157 countries. As many as 550 gold medals were awarded in 18 events. In terms of the total number of medals won, Belarus shared places 21 through 23 with Hungary and Iran. None of the news sources cited here gave complete lists of the participants nor the winners. (News coverage of the Paralympics by most media, including the USA, was similarly poorly reported.) Information from the independent BelaPAN, No. 132; Monday, October 30, 2000; 3:40 p.m., and the official BelTA: October 27, 2000 and October 24, 2000.
