  Printed, color catalogs are also available for (1) 1992-1993, (2) 1994-1995, (3) 1996, and (4) 1997, for a nominal charge (in summer, 1998, the equivalent of one-half US dollar within Belarus). Possibly such catalogs exist for all years, but I have only seen them through 1997.

  • Resources on the Belarus governmental Beltelekom host are unreliable, unpredictable, and almost always only in the Russian language. The complete Web site is not in English, and on the main menu, there is a poorly translated warning message announcing which sections are not in English. Governmental Web sites sometimes disappear for months at a time, reappearing with a new URL, without any notification. Belarus government agencies apparently do not attract the "the best and the brightest" of Belarusians, as the government Web sites will attest.
  
  
  
  • The Internet addresses of the Web pages related to Belposhta have changed at least a couple of times per year for the past several years, most recently in 2001 (for no known nor announced reason). From time to time, sections appear and then disappear again from this Web site. The Web site is through the Belarusian governmental agency, Beltelekom.
  
  
  
  • Sometimes you have to be quite persistent to get information from Web sites that are located in Belarus. In general (for those of us in North America or otherwise far from Europe), it is best to try to access them when it is late night there (approximately 7 hours later than the US Eastern Standard--and Daylight--Time).

Examples of Belarusian Postage Stamps

Reproductions of Belarusian postage stamps are used to illustrate this Web site (for example, as portraits of famous Belarusians, etc.). As they are added, cross-links to them will be included in the following list:

• The (a) 1992 Belarus white-red-white flag and country map, and (b) the 1992 Pahonia stamps are on the Home Page of this Web site: A Belarus Miscellany.

  The symbols on these stamps are claimed--by the current regime in power in Belarus--to be displayed only by people who are "against" them (and further extrapolating the same "logic" (sic), by people who are against Belarus). These stamps were still available at the philately section of the main post office in Mensk in summer, 1998 (although the clerk had told me they didn't have them, these stamps were on a display stand with many other stamps).
