Notes about Newspapers in Belarus:

• There are so many newspapers currently published in Belarus, they are almost uncountable. If capitalism ever takes hold in Belarus, this situation will change (that is, much fewer newspapers). So if you love lots of little newspapers, enjoy them now.
• Yes, this file is too big, and it is very incomplete, and the information changes faster than I can input it. (I'll work on solving all of these issues when I get some "free" time.)
• Most newspapers are in the Russian language. The few newspapers in the Belarusian language have a much smaller circulation than the Russian-language newspapers. These Belarusian language newspapers also usually have some articles in Russian.
• Belarusian language newspapers are written in Narkomovka, a Soviet, Russified version of Belarusian instituted during 1933 and was part of the anti-nationalism of Stalinism. These language laws are still enforced in Belarus in 1998.
• Nasha Niva is the only newspaper in Belarus printed in Tareskevitza, and it will go to court in mid-August, 1998, to defend itself about this "heinous crime."
• No matter what the language is of the newspaper (for example, Russian, Belarusian, Polish, etc.), almost all TV program listings are in Russian, with only a few exceptions (for example, Nastaunitzkaya Hazeta [the Teacher's Newspaper], of the Ministry of Education). A few of the newspapers list the programming for the Belarusian channel in Belarusian, and all of the other channels in Russian.

Beloruskaya Delovaya Hazieta

Important Note: According to Reuters and other news sources, Beloruskaya Delovaya Hazieta has been shut down by decree of the current Belarusian government (executive branch), as of early June, 1996 (Reuters, June 27, 1996, on the newsgroup, clari.world.europe.eastern). " [US] State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns expressed disappointment Thursday over the closing of an independent newspaper in Belarus."

"We're very disappointed by that and disappointed by many of the actions of the Belarusian government." The other actions include the government's denial of access to printing facilities and distribution networks for the the Delovaya Hazieta and other independent publications, Burns said in an earlier statement. "Belarus is a party to international human rights agreements which recognize every individual's right to freedom of speech and assembly," Burns said. "We urge the government of Belarus to comply with these internationally recognized standards, which Belarus has undertaken freely to respect."

Molodyozhny Prospekt

Molodyozhny Prospekt started to appear in summer, 1999. It was founded by Vladimir Novosyad, a member of the parliament disbanded by President Lukashenko in 1996. It has been publishing material critical of the government. The newspaper reportedly plans to become weekly in October, 1999.

Narodnaja Hazieta

Natziyanal'naye Hramadska-Palitichnaye i Parlamentzkaye Vidanne;   founded by the Supreme Soviet, published five days a week, circulation 207,000, pro-Lukashenko after the removal of Iosif Seredich from the position of editor-in-chief (?). Primarily in Russian; some Belarusian.

Narodnaja Volya

Nasha Niva   Mensk, Belarus

An independent, biweekly newspaper published entirely in Belarusian and with a circulation of some 5,000. Nasha Niva was one of the earliest Belarusian newspapers (Nasha Dola was the first legal newspaper), founded in 1906 and published between 1906 and 1915. Nasha Niva was of critical importance to the Rebirth Movement for the self-determination of the Belarusian people at that time, and the name has strong symbolic value today. (Note: Two facsimile volumes of its early editions have been published in book form and can be found in used bookstores in Belarus, especially in Mensk.)

Nasha Niva was re-started by its chief editor, Syarhey Dubavets, in Vilnius in 1991. The newspaper is printed in Mensk and distributed by the state network of kiosks and, to a lesser extent, by the editorial staff. It uses the traditional Belarusian orthography which was banned in 1933 as part of the Stalinist anti-nationalism and Russification. This law is still in effect in Belarus today.

Note: Nasha Niva went to court in mid-August, 1998, to defend itself about the "heinous crime" of using the Taraskevitza form of Belarusian.

"The newspaper's front page will feature both Naviny's logo and that of Svaboda. The first issue will be distributed in 20,000 copies. . . . According to Naviny's Chief Editor, Igor Germenchuk, the newspaper's distribution has become a matter of some difficulty. 'Mensk's postal service has agreed to accept only 200-300 copies of the newspaper for distribution through Soyuzpechat stands. Formerly, the Soyuzpechat network used to sell 12,000 copies of Svaboda,' he said. 'Even at the initial stage of the newspaper's existence, the authorities put obstacles in our way. The Ministry of Communications has rejected our proposal that the former Svaboda subscribers be granted a month-long free subscription to Naviny. So subscribers will be able to start receiving the newspaper beginning from February,' said Mr Germenchuk. In Belarusian, including the only complete TV listing printed in the Belarusian language that I know of: Monday-Friday is in one issue (Saturdays); Saturday & Sunday in another (Thursdays). [Is this division a capitalistic marketing ploy(?)]

Vitsebskaya Trybuna

In August, 2000, the Vitebsk-based Center of Youth Initiatives Kontur has published the first issue of its Belarusian-language newspaper, Vitsebskaya Trybuna (229 copies). The editorial staff says that the newspaper tends to provide all-round and unbiased coverage of events in Vitebsk and the Vitebsk region. The newspaper's registration with the State Committee for the Press would be required for a larger print run.
