In His Own Words. . . .

  • Democracy
    • Mr. Lukashenka uses the term "democracy" to refer to anything he decides or that agrees with him. That is, "democracy" means ideas only coming from him. Anyone disagreeing with him, therefore, is "anti-democratic" and an enemy of Belarus. See "opposition."

  • Opposition
    • Mr. Lukashenka uses the term "opposition" as a strong pejorative/code word. It has a connotation of traitor, murder; doer of horrendous things. The term "opposition" refers to people, organizations, publications, etc., that Mr. L. and his sycophants cannot control and have ideas he hasn't thought of, and therefore, must be against him and "Belarus" (from his point of view, he and Belarus are synonyms).

People of the "opposition" do such "radical" things as speak in Belarusian (i.e., the language of their birth), and have their children taught in it. Using Belarusian in a country called Belarus is something apparently beyond the understanding of Mr. Lukashenka. (The Belarusian Constitution guarantees that Belarusian is an official co-language of Belarus, but Mr. L's regime is very selective in adhering to the precepts of the constitution.)
