News Article: Council of Ministers Authorizes Negotiations Aimed at Signing an Agreement on Ethnic Minorities' Rights with Estonia

    "The Belarusian Council of Ministers has given its authorization for negotiations aimed at signing an interstate agreement with Estonia on ensuring ethnic minorities' rights."

    "The draft agreement has been prepared by the State Committee on Religion and National Affairs and approved by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, of Justice, of Culture, and of Education, and the State Committee on the Press."

    "About 300 Estonians live in Belarus and about 20,000 Belarusians in Estonia, Janus Varu, Estonia's general consul in Belarus, told BelaPAN. Mr. Varu said that about 50 percent of the Belarusians in Estonia form four communities, speak in Belarusian in their daily life, and have preserved Belarusian cultural traditions."
