Janka Juknavets
1921-
Janka Juknavets was born in the Vitsebsk district.
His family was burned by Lithuanian punishers. In 1944 he was sent to
Germany, where he lived in a camp for displaced persons until 1949. There,
he published his first poems. Once in America, he became a computer consultant,
until his retirement. Right now he lives on Staten Island.
Janka Juknavets is one of the greatest writers not
only abroad, but also in the modern Belarusian literature. In his many
books of poems, prose and drama, he united Belarusian folklore and European
culture. He was the first to translate the poems of T. S. Eliot and Ezra
Pound to Belarusian. Janka Juknavets published ''Rustle of Silence'' (1955),
''Columbuses'' (1957), ''Dreams Abroad'' (1994), ''Selected Works'' (in three
volumes) (1989-1990), a
book of drama (1996), etc. Many of his works still remain unpublished.
Besides being a writer, Janka Juknavets is also a painter and a sculptor.
