"Nikolai Fomichev, deputy supreme chieftain, said that the AUC has its cells in all regional centers, with the exception of Grodno. The AUC's Vitebsk regional cell has 600 members. According to Mr Fomichev, about 3,000 Cossacks reside in Belarus. But one does not need to have Cossack predecessors to join the AUC, it is enough to 'observe Cossack traditions and share their outlook,' he said."
"Mr Fomichev said that the AUC does not have any direct political goals. It advocates the unification of all Slavic peoples and is ready to cooperate with all organizations supporting the re-establishment of the Soviet Union. In his opinion, 'the union of Cossacks of the three fraternal Slavic peoples (Belarusians, Russians, and Ukrainians) may become an integrating force for the Soviet Union's re-establishment.' "
